Noynoy wants to deny college students’ right to education – Anakbayan
Youth group Anakbayan expressed outrage today over a Palace announcement which said that State Colleges and Universities (SCUs) should hike their tuition rates as a ‘solution’ to proposed budget cuts to the said schools
“Is Aquino and his mouthpiece being deliberately stupid? Or is it something they just can’t help but do? Tuition and other fee increases are the very reason why we oppose budget cuts” said Anakbayan spokesperson Charisse Bañez.
The youth group has previously noted a trend under the previous Administration in which the decrease in the share of state funding in the total budget of SCUs was accompanied by an increase in tuition and other fees being collected by the said schools’ administrations.
According to a study by the Kabataan Partylist, state subsidy accounted for 87.74% of SCUs total funding in 2001. By this year, the number has dropped to 67.35%. At the same time, SCUs’ revenue from tuition and other fees increased from P1.16 billion to P7.78 billion.
“Combined with the cut to the budget of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), premiere state universities like UP (University of the Philippines), PUP (Polytechnic University of the Philippines), and PNU (Philippine Normal University) will become the sole domain of those who can pay for private school-level fees” said Bañez.
The budget for CHED’s college scholarships will be slashed from P1.15 billion this year to P501 million in 2011.
The youth leader sarcastically congratulated Aquino, saying “this is indeed something he did which his predecessor was unable to do”.
“In exactly 100 days, Noynoy did what (former president Gloria) Arroyo failed to do: openly proclaim one’s opposition to college students’ right to education” she said.
Meanwhile, Bañez defended four UP Manila students who held a protest inside a stage-managed ‘public report’ on Noynoy’s 1st 100 days, saying ‘what they did is tame compared to what the rest of the youth wants to do to you’.
“Consider yourself lucky. They merely shouted slogans at you. If it were up to us, we’d be throwing your fellow rotten eggs at you” said the youth leader.
