Students, youths get ready for nationwide walkout against budget cuts
Protest actions by youths and students intensify in preparation for the Sept. 24 nationwide walkout.
Sept. 13 – More than 300 students of the Phil. Normal University, led by its Supreme Student Government, held a rally in front of the DBM (Dept. of Budget and Management) office in the Malacañang compound. Other participating groups include Anakbayan, Gabriela Youth, STAND PNU, and The Torch (PNU’s official student publication).
Sept. 14 – Students led by the League of Filipino Students held a lightning rally in front of the Malacañang Gate 7 to protest President Noynoy Aquino’s deafness in regards to the growing opposition to the education budget cuts.
Sept. 16 -Youths led by Anakbayan also held a lightning rally, this time inside Congress. Inside, student leaders such as Cori Co, the UP Student Regent, held a silent protest where Congress was deliberating on the military budget.
Sept. 17 – Members of Gabriela in UP Manila held a mock funeral parade all over the UP Manila College of Arts and Sciences to dramatize the effect of the proposed budget cuts on the University of the Philippines.
